The Difference Between Carpenter Ants vs. Termites

Spring in Alabama brings warm weather, blooming azaleas, and, unfortunately, swarming insects. If you’ve spotted winged intruders around your window sills in Birmingham, Huntsville, or Montgomery, you might be asking yourself: Are these just ants, or do I have a termite problem?

It is a question our team at Alabama Professional Services hears often. While both pests can threaten the structural integrity of your home, they are very different enemies.

Spotting the Physical Differences

To the untrained eye, a swarming carpenter ant and a swarming termite look remarkably similar.

However, if you can get a close look (safely), there are three key giveaways.

  • The Waist: Carpenter ants have a clearly defined, pinched waist (like a wasp). Termites have a broad, rectangular waist that makes them look like one long cylinder.
  • The Antennae: Ant antennae are bent or “elbowed,” while termite antennae are perfectly straight and beaded.
  • The Wings: Both insects have four wings, but termite wings are all equal in length. Carpenter ants have front wings that are noticeably longer than their back wings.

Different Habits, Different Damage

The biggest confusion comes from the fact that both pests destroy wood, but they do it for different reasons.

Termites eat the wood to survive. They work silently from the inside out, often leaving the surface looking normal while the core is hollowed out. You might see mud tubes running up your foundation—these are their “highways” from the soil to your home.

Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it to build nests. They prefer moist, damaged wood and will chew smooth, sandpaper-like tunnels through your beams. Instead of mud tubes, they leave behind “frass”—small piles of wood shavings that look like sawdust.

Why You Need a Professional Opinion

Because termites hide deep within walls and carpenter ants mimic their behavior, misidentifying them can be a costly mistake. Termites alone cause billions in damages annually, and home insurance rarely covers them.

At Alabama Professional Services, we believe in honest, transparent service. Whether it’s a simple ant treatment or a comprehensive Sentricon® termite installation, we are here to protect our neighbors’ homes.
